I am Prius'd
The NEW CAR is here! A sky-blue (they call it Seaside Pearl) 2007 Toyota Prius with creamy leather uphostery, and it's in my custody. As of today, it's been contracted and financed for as well. It's got wacky differences from ordinary cars -- it being a hybrid. Your car "key" is a computer chip that you slot into the dashboard. A round POWER button (like on every electronic device) starts it. The gear shift is just a joy stick that you nudge generally in the direction of the gear you want. The gas pedal is actually just a box with a computer sensor that tells the drivetrain how much pressure you're putting on it.

I'm not used to driving with a computer screen telling me stuff either. I'm watching the animated graphics display when the electric motor is engaged versus the gasoline engine. Very trippy! They told me repair is expensive -- more than 40 computers in the thing, and it costs thousands to fix. In fact, they said it's a $52,000 car, but government subsidies let them sell it for half that. Good, 'cos I'm not paying no $52K for a ride.

It was a frustrating afternoon and evening as I worked on finding someone to take me to the far side of Round Rock to the dealership in the crazy ass traffic. But LeslieC had an unexpectedly clear evening and she was a prince!(ess)

And under the category of it all happens at once: The Olympus FE-200 digital camera with 5x optical zoom (and a macro setting that lets you take pictures from two inches away) came in today too. It seems awesome, but I'm too covered up with getting ready for the screenwriters' workshop with the story editor from New Line Cinema tomorrow to play with it!

cool. enjoy the new car. you'll get used to the screen. if it annoys you too much, you can always turn it off.

What color did you get?

They tell me the blue is kinda rare, but I was okay with any light color exterior (it's actually more a medium color than light) and they seemed jazzed to try to trade for the one blue car coming over on the boat in this shipment.

Congratulations on finally getting the car! And having the patience to wait it out. I still sometimes wish my old car had lasted just long enough to die in the dealership lot as I picked up my new Prius.

Now you'll have to track your MPG to see how close you get to the claimed EPA mileage. And to see if you change your driving habits to improve the mileage in the next couple of months.

I'm surprised by the government subisdy comment. My impression was that the only subsidy our ethanol-loving government gave the Prius was a buyer's tax credit that's phasing out. I thought that Toyota itself sold the car for less than cost (at least at first, I believe they now claim to make a profit on the car) because hybrid technology is a strategic investment.

You got one too?

I didn't realize you'd bought a Prius too. I should've picked your brain some. I was frustrated at my long wait.

No, I ordered one a couple of years ago, but the car I was driving was so close to death about three months before the Prius arrived I bought something else I could drive immediately. Despite the long wait, at least you were able to wait it out and get one!

You wouldn't have learned much from my experience anyway. I ordered Prius and got on the waiting list in Oct. 2004 and the wait time kept increasing. Because that was the first year of the current generation of Prius, you couldn't find used ones and anyone who sold their new one was asking higher than list price. Because I bought a new car months before my Prius arrived, I turned down delivery of the Prius. The dealership didn't mind because they knew they'd find someone who'd buy it.

Now I dream of owning a next generation hybrid or first generation of the next big thing!
